The term Nature Deficit Disorder was coined by Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. (Research shows that our children today have a lack of appreciation of nature due to a lack of time spent outside.) Some of our children are urban bound and do not have access to nature centers or state parks. Other children are overly 'plugged in.' They spend too much time in front of video games, television, and the computer and not enough time outside. Mr. Louv believes that children should be outside playing, fising camping, biking, hiking, or taking part in other outdoor activities that foster an appreciation for nature.

Mr. Louv is co-founder of Children and Nature Network. You can learn more about him, his work and the site at www.childrenandnature.org.
