Montecristo cigars first began to be produced in 1935 by a man named Garcia Menendez in Havana, Cuba. At this particular time, he was also the owner of the H. Upmann cigar brand which was extremely popular. The name for the Montecristo cigars came from the novel, the Count of Monte Christo which was very popular reading during that time, especially among those that rolled cigars.

The Montecristo brand is the most available Cuban cigar or in another words I guess, the most popular one. It was only after Cohiba brand was introduced that the Montecristo's popularity fell to number two. The construction and the variety of flavors that can be found in this brand is truly amazing and one of the finest hand rolled Cuban cigars ever created in history of not just Cuba but the world.

Montecristo also offers a lot machine rolled cigars now which I guess can contribute to it's decline in popularity. People like the rare and exotic notion that is attached to Cuban cigars and machine rolled cigars really don't help. However, I understand it as the machine rolled Cuban cigars are very light in taste and great for beginners trying to step into the Cuban cigar genre to expand their horizons and senses. Remember though that the hand rolled version of Montecristo Cuban cigars are still considered one of the best cigars in the world.

This has led rise to some rumors that the Montecristo number 4 is what the company uses to train its amateur rollers. Regardless of the possibility that this may be true, it is still the top of the Montecristo cigars and is enjoyed by many, the world over. Frankly, it is the top selling Cuban cigar of all time right after the Cohiba. Before the Cohiba brand was introduced, the Montecristo use to be number one.

Montecristo are well known and very well distributed around the globe. If you can't find a Cohiba, you will still find a Montecristo. It is a top selling brand for a reason and this is why the Montecristo is considered to be a part of Cuban heritage. Well done Mr.Garcia, well done indeed!
