Curtains are now considered old fashioned because blinds have replaced the type of window coverings chosen in most homes. Blinds are convenient and easy to operate, they block the sun and heat from entering your home, which helps to keep a room cooler and they also protect your floors from being damaged by the sun.

Blinds have really become the future when having to choose a type of window covering. They are constructed from vinyl, wood, cloth and aluminums and because of these different textures, they add a bit of flair and accentuate your other furnishings. Just think of the bold statement you can make with deep and vibrant colors or you can soften up any room with a white or pastel blind.

There is very little care and maintenance when it comes to keeping your blinds looking like new. For vinyl and aluminums all that is required to wipe the slats with a damp cloth. If they happen to need more of a cleaning then just soak them in warm soapy dishwater for about 15 minutes. Wipe them off with a cloth and put them up.

For cloth and wood blinds use a vacuum to remove all dust and debris from the slats. You can still clean them while they are hanging up unless it has been a long time since they have been cleaned.

The cloth blinds take a lot more effort to keep clean and, therefore, are not usually the first choice. But, you may like the design, color and style and may not be overly concerned about how much maintenance it will require to keep them free from dust and debris.

Also, you will find that you can clean cloth blinds while they are still hanging up. Just use a damp cloth to remove any stains and be sure to attach your vacuum cleaner brush to remove the dirt. Remember, you do not want to damage the blinds so when using the vacuum brush be sure to go in the same direction as the fabric.

Blinds have become the most popular way to cover home windows in America, and with all the benefits they offer it is no wonder. They are easy to install as well, and it only takes minutes and a few simple hand tools.

These window accessories will last for years, sometimes longer depending on how often you clean them, and the price for them is very reasonable. Make sure you measure your window before buying blinds, though, or you may end up with blinds that do not fit correctly or look right.
