Hair Extensions

Have you ever wanted longer, thicker, fuller hair? One of the most popular ways to achieve that goal is with the application of hair extensions. The science behind hair extensions has become more and more advanced, leaving the customer with more options and choices than ever before! There are many different methods for attaching the hair, many different chemicals and tools used, and many different possibilities for styles.

There are three types of extensions, which are categorized by the way the extension is applied: clip-in extensions, bonded or sewn weft extensions, and strand-by-strand extensions. Clip-in extensions offer the most ease and flexibility because they can be put in and taken out whenever the client pleases. Since the growth of your hair doesn't affect the clip-in extensions, they can last forever if properly cared for.

The second type of extension is called a ''weft extension''. The term weft refers to a form of the extension hair which is attached at one end and free-flowing at the other, resulting in a curtain-like look. These extensions are applied either by gluing or sewing, one weft at a time.

The strand-by-strand method refers to extensions that are added in small sections of about fifty to several hundred hairs. This is the most time-consuming of all the methods. These sections are attached to your existing hair by means of clamping devices (like micro links), glues, polymers, or heat fusing methods. The strand-by-strand method is probably the least noticeable of all the other extension methods, even though it takes the longest to complete.

Strand-by-strand extensions can be added either with an adhesive substance or a clamping device. Some people prefer adhesive attachment because the extensions look more natural, while others prefer a clamping device, because it's less damaging to your hair.

If you're considering hair extensions, keep this in mind:

* There are many different extension methods, categorized by materials used, application methods, and hair type. Make sure you familiarize yourself with all of the available options before making a decision.

* If you have extensions, it's important to remember that they require extra care and maintenance. Be sure to check with your stylist on the appropriate care and maintenance guidelines for the extensions method you choose.

* Human hair extensions blend better with your real hair, so it's best to stick with human hair if you want a more natural look. But if you're looking for crazy colors - like red, pink, orange, or blue - try synthetic hair. You'll have a lot more choices.

* Extensions can be much heavier than your natural hair. If this idea bothers you, make sure to talk to your stylist about possibly adding fewer extensions.

* There are chemicals used in extension glue that can cause allergic reactions. Ask your stylist if the glue they are using has caused damage to any other clients' skin or scalps.
