One of today's skin care treatments which has continued to grow in popularity is a procedure known as microdermabrasion. Simply put it can be described as facial sandblasting or facial vacuuming these descriptions refer to the two methods / functions of the microdermabrasion machine. Primarily the machine creates a circular air flow that forces aluminum oxide crystals to be blasted onto the skin's surface which are then sucked back up together with the resulting debris. The debris consists mainly of the crystals but includes dead and dying skin cells. The overall result is the removal of the very top layer of skin.

Microdermabrasion is described as a non-invasive cosmetic procedure and, as such, the treatment carries little or no risked when it is performed by a professional who has been suitably trained and fully understands the nature of skin. Although the process is simple and can now be performed, using professional techniques, in the home with equipment costing as little as $200 the professional machines are far more powerful and, obviously, produce far better results (depending upon the skill of the technician).

One of the most immediate benefits that you will notice is the increased tightness of the skin and the fresh look and feel of it. Immediately following a session the skin can sometimes appear slightly red but this quickly settles to a healthy glow. Your skin will also have a nice sheen and far fewer open pores giving an incredibly youthful appearance which can improve of a course of treatments.

Microdermabrasion is well known to be extremely effective against the formation of acne. Acne begins with the formation of 'comedones' (a comedo is a plug which blocks the opening of the pore found in both blackheads and whiteheads). Microdermabrasion blasts away these comedones and deep cleans the skin to such a degree that the risk of a fresh outbreak of acne in that area is vastly reduced.

Acne can be devastating and the effects can only be fully understood by those who have suffered from the disease. Not only is it considered unsightly but it is also really painful and certainly uncomfortable at the best of times. It is little wonder that so many suffers also suffer from depression and for this reason the benefits, and importance, of microdermabrasion can not be understated for such people.

There are many different acne treatments available and not all work at all times for all people. Much depends on the individual's skin and some treatments are often too harsh for some skin types. Microdermabrasion can be used on all skin types and all degrees of acne. For this reason, and it's effectiveness, it is quickly becoming the treatment of preference for many acne sufferers.

For sufferers of acne who have been left with badly scarred skin microdermabrasion has the wonderful advantage in that it has been clinically proven to vastly reduce the visibility of acne scars. Furthermore it can remove, completely, lesser acne scars and even the tone of the skin. The treatment is also incredibly effective at removing fine lines, spider lines and fine wrinkles. Although many people notice a profound improvement after only a few sessions it is only after around 10 sessions that maximum benefits are obtained (which can then be maintained by regular "top up" treatments).

Overall the most probable reason why microdermabrasion continues to be one of the most popular skin care treatments is that there are so many clearly visible benefits. Virtually everybody can benefit from the procedure in only a few sessions and, for this reason, it is likely to continue growing in popularity for some time to come yet.
