The country of Austria is found in central Europe and is boarded by several other countries including Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. The capital is the beautiful city of Vienna which is located on the Danube River.

However, along with the spectacular vistas that both Vienna and Salzburg offer this country has a lot more to offer its visitors. There are mountains, lakes and rivers where a variety of different outdoors activities take place from mountain climbing, to skiing and even kayaking.

When it comes to what time of year is best to visit this European country then it depends upon the kinds of activities you are looking to do. For example if you want to enjoy some hiking or mountain biking then summer is the best time. As for skiing and snowboarding well of course then the winter is the best time of the year to visit Austria.

The warmest months that Austria has occur between April and October, but these two months can be slightly cooler than the ones in between so bring some warm clothing if visiting at these times. For those who do not like it too hot then avoid the months of July and August as temperatures can become very high and unbearable in some cases. Plus you will also find that this is their high season and so prices on accommodation etc. are much higher.

Another reason why you should not consider visiting Austria during the months of July and August is that because of the heat many of the major attractions in the major cities are closed. So if you were wanting to visit the opera or take in the Spanish Riding School then this is not the time.

Although these attractions may be closed there are plenty of other events which take place in Austria throughout the year. Certainly when it comes to music festivals this country is world renowned for the ones that it has. The first ones begin at the beginning of the year and New Year in Vienna is wonderful with its concerts and lavish balls. Then each month you are likely to find something happening, in February the Shrovetide Carnival takes place which is a celebration of spring returning.

Next you will find numerous carnivals taking place on the second Thursday after Whitsun which celebrate Corpus Christi. One such carnival actually takes place at Salzkammergut and is held on the lake. But the highlight of Austria's music festivals is the Wiener Festwochen which commences in May and runs through until the middle of June.

Certainly what you will find if you choose to go to Austria on holiday there is so much more to do than just the skiing in winter. For those who are after a bit more culture or just want time to relax and unwind then a visit to this beautifully landlocked country should be considered.
